✦ Synopsis
Infrared spectra of -Bi 2 Te 4 O 11 , -Bi 2 Te 4 O 11 , Bi 2 Te 2 O 7 , and Bi 2 TeO 5 , have been compared and analyzed. The bands in the region of 620+400 cm ؊1 correspond to the stretching modes of the bismuth+oxygen framework, while those in the region of 800+620 cm ؊1 belong to the stretching vibrations of the Te+O bonds. TeO 3 polyhedra of trigonal+pyramidal con5guration with equal bond lengths (within 0.02 nm) have been found in bismuth tellurites. The largest deformation of TeO 3 has been observed in Bi 2 TeO 5 as compared to the other bismuth tellurites investigated in this study. Connected TeO 3 polyhedra form Te 2 O 5 groups in the structure of -Bi 2 Te 4 O 11 . The relation between the frequency of the asymmetric stretching mode and the length of Bi+O bond is linear for Bi 2 TeO 5 and nonlinear for -Bi 2 Te 4 O 11 and -Bi 2 O 3 .
