โœฆ Synopsis

A sample of 863 U.S. college students enrolled at a large Midwestern university were poUed in an effort to ascertain what media sources a representative sample of college students might utilize most extensively; to gauge their actual knowledge of current events; and, finally, to compare responses obtained with reported types of media exposure.

Response patterns on the current events test were analyzed in terms of the interrelationships among gender; frequency of use of television and newspapers; self-ascriptions of awareness of current events; ascriptions of the importance of a well-informed citizenry; and grade point average. Chisquare deviations and stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed significant differences in type of media exposure and gender on test performance.
