Comments on 'Valuing weather radar benefits for winter road maintenance: a practical case example'
Smith & Vick (1994) use a simple decision-analysis model to determine the financial benefits accruing from the use of weather radar imagery for winter road maintenance by the Western Isles Island Council (WIIC). The approach is to be commended, not least because it demonstrates very clearly how such financial benefits are to be calculated from a knowledge of the costs of protection, the loss if no protective action is taken and contingency tables which characterise the performance of the forecasting methods under assessment.
