The effect of solvent size on the diffusion process is studied for various solvents with natural rubber and polybutadiene in terms of the free-volume theory. The importance of energy effects on the diffusion of penetrants in rubbers is examined. The critical molar volume of the polymer jumping unit

✦ Synopsis
Representative free volume theories of diffusion in polymer-solvent systems have been formulated by Fujita and also by Vrentas and Duda. Although often considered to be essentially equivalent, these two theories are different in their goal as well as in their underlying assumptions. This paper aims to make their basic features clear and points out some important aspects of the Vrentas-Duda theory that require reconsideration for better agreement with observations.
