The combined meeting of the International (ISH) and the American (ASH) Societies of Hematology, held in the city of the latter's birth, was a fitting occasion on which to reflect on their roots. It also provided an opportunity to review how they had evolved independently but interacted to foster interest and progress in hematology over the past 4% decades. This review is based on the vital documentation provided by the late Dr.

Oliver P. Jones of Buffalo [l] and the late Dr. Thomas Hale Ham of Cleveland [2], the original historians of these societies; by Dr. James L. Tullis of Boston [3]; and
