โฆ Synopsis
The society was founded in 1968 to promote international and multidisciplinary cooperation in scholarly activity and research into the history of the behavioral and social sciences.
Between twenty and thirty papers will be presented over the three-and-one-half-day period. The format of the sessions allows time for, and encourages, discussion following each talk. Papers are preprinted for registrants in order to facilitate discussion.
Two symposia are planned: "Comparative Psychology in America during the First Half of the Twentieth Century," and "Critical History and the Authority of Science."
For the second year, a workshop on critical history will be held just prior to the beginning of the other CHEIRON activities. The workshop will be on the afternoon of 10 June, and all those interested in participating are welcome.
The opening of the meeting will be marked by a receptibn on the evening of 10 June, George W. Stocking, Jr., a scholar well-known for his contributions to the study of the history of social and behavioral sciences, will speak at the banquet on 12 June. His topic will be: "Books Unwritten, Turning Points Unmarked: Notes for the Anti-History of a Social Scientific Discipline."
A novel feature of this year's meeting will be the First Annual Behavioral and Social Science Film Festival. Films will include: "The Function of the Brain" (I. P. Pavlov, 1932); original footage of J. B. Watson and Little Albert; "Freud" (1962), starring Montgomery Clift and directed by John Huston; and several short films of early studies of ape intelligence
