A number of paper chromatographic methods serve to separate porphyrins or their esters according to the number of carboxyl side chains (1). However, most do not separate the common dicarboxylic compounds such as meso, proto, hemato, and deutero porphyrins.

Chu and Chu report very good separations on these porphyrins by a two-dimensional paper chromatographic method, but the quantity of separated material was too small for further characterization

(2). Dunning and Carlton report the paper chromatography of petroleum porphyrin aggregates on both strips and columns (3). Lucas and Orten describe a column partition chromatography system using hydrated silica gel and report the separation of proto, meso, copro, and uro porphyrins (4). They do not report Rf values.
