Accurate quantum-mechanical vakres of the collision-induced absorption coefficient are reported for a Ne-Ar mixture in the binarycollision approximation. Two of the known expressions for the induced dipole moment are tested and two others are proposed to obtain good nyeement with experiment.

✦ Synopsis
Calculations for the collision-induced absorption in a He-Ne mixture in the far infmred (200-600 cm?) are presented. The present calculation includes an exact treatment of the collision dynamics and of the radiation field to the first order. The information used is the interatomic potential and dipole moment function. Using values of these pammeters obtained from independent and extensive studies, we obtain values of the absorption coefticient which are about two orders of mamitude smaller than obtained previously. Possible causes of this large discrepancy are discussed.
