✦ Synopsis

We study a class of endomorphisms of subfactor index 2 , called binary shifts, on the hyperfinite (\mathrm{II}_{1}) factor. Invariants are identified for cocycle conjugacy and strong cocycle conjugacy classes. In particular, there is a connection between the Bratteli diagram associated with a binary shift and strong cocycle conjugacy. (S) 1994 Academic Press, Inc.
