✦ Synopsis

Cobalt hydrogen selenite chloride dihydrate, Co(HSeO 3 )ClÁ-2H 2 O, is built up from a network of trans CoO 4 Cl 2 octahedra, cis Co(H 2 O) 4 Cl 2 octahedra and HSeO 3 pyramids. These units [d av (CoÐO) = 2.075 (2) A Ê , d av (CoÐCl) = 2.5370 (6) A Ê and d av (SeÐO) = 1.703 (2) A Ê ] share vertices by way of CoÐOÐ Se and CoÐClÐCo bonds to produce a three-dimensional structure. Co of the trans octahedron occupies an inversion centre; Co of the cis octahedron and two attached water O atoms lie on a mirror plane. The hydrogen-bonding scheme has been elucidated and involves OÐHÁ Á ÁO and OÐHÁ Á ÁCl interactions. The title compound is isostructural with Cu(HSeO 3 )ClÁ2H 2 O, although the metal polyhedra are distinctly different in the two phases.
