✦ Synopsis


A method involving acid extraction, fractionation, derivatization and g.c.-m.s. analysis was used to characterize the basic nitrogen compounds in coal tar. It was found that these compounds fall into ten compound types belonging to eighteen homologous series. Separation of aza-arenes from amines by derivatization is recommended as a better procedure.
