✦ Synopsis

The antipanic effect and tolerability of alprazolam and imipramine were compared during 9 weeks in 55 inpatients with panic disorder with or without agoraphobia. Both drugs decreased significantly the frequency of panic attacks, alprazolam as early as 3 weeks of treatment. The symptoms of generalized anxiety and depression decreased similarly in both groups. The tolerability of alprazolam appeared slightly better than that of imipramine. Drug-induced anticholinergic side-effects were more frequent in the imipramine group, whereas sedation, impotency, and myoclonic jerks appeared more often in the alprazolam group.
