Within forty-four years it is the ninth edition with a new co-author and new guest-authors. This edition is organized into five sections. All authors and reviewers are experts in their fields. First part is nutrition basics and material for teaching basic nutrition and opens with an overview of the processes of digestion, absorption, transportation and excretion. Proteins, fats and carbohydrates contribute in varying amounts to the total energy pool. Utilisation and conservation of this energy, the involvement of vitamins and minerals are central points of this part. Many tables for calculation of energy or sources of vitamins and minerals are presented. Second part is titled "Nutrition in Life Cycle". The significance of nutrition at specific times of growth, development and aging is becoming increasingly appreciated. Special problems of pregnancy and lactation, infancy, childhood, aldolescence and aging are discussed. Next section includes background chapters related to the nutritional care process. Chapters cover the concept of individuals nutritional status as a reflection of eating habits, pharmacological and nutritional treatment, and the nutrition resources in the community. Assessment of nutritional status, nutritional care process and methods of nutritional support are discussed. Part four reflected nutrition for health and fitness and the evolution of nutritional science.
