✦ Synopsis


Anecdotical reports seem to indicate that traffic accidents present their maximum occurrence in a definite period of the day, week, and year. In 1989, 288,341 traffic accidents, with 216,329 injured subjects, and with a 75.0Β°/0 injury rate (~Pinjured / 100 accidents) have been reported (1).

In order to verify whether traffic accidents have circadian, circaseptan, and circannual rhythms in their occurrence, an inferential statistical analysis has been carded out. The total number of accidents, the total number of injured subjects, and the injured/accidents ratio (%) per time intervals have been taken into account. To evaluate the temporal distribution, a rhythmometric analysis was employed, utilizing the "single-cosinor" method (4), which is able to verify the
