✦ Synopsis

Abstract

Solubilization of cholesterol in water with cholesterol‐containing poly(N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone) was studied. The non‐ionic amphiphilic polymers were synthesized via copolymerization of cholesterol‐based monomers with N‐vinyl‐2‐pyrrolidone; the copolymers were dissolved isotropically in water to form hydrophobic microdomains solubilizing cholesterol efficiently. Electron micrographs revealed that the amphiphilic polymers undergo aggregational changes from random microphases to bilayers as free cholesterol is incorporated into the polymeric hydrophobic domains.
