Mercury organic compounds incorporated m solvent polymeric membranes act as neutral tamers for chlonde In sharp contrast to classical anion exchangers, membranes contammg (~-[4,5-dlmethyl-3,6-bIs(octyloxy)-1,2-phenyleneDb&tnfluoroacetato-O&mercury (ETH 9009) or tetrak&_(dunethyl sulphoxlde-0 O)lbls(p_[hexafluoro-pentanedlonatd2 -)-0 O'~b~s{~-[4,5-d~methyl-3,6-bdoctyloxy)-1,2-phenylene])tetramercury (ETH 9011) as amon carriers, tr~dodecylmethylammonmm chlonde as addltwe, b&Zethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS) as plastuzer and polfivmyl chloride) as membrane matrut show a preference for chloride over bromide, thlocyanate, perchlorate, nitrate and sahcylate Ion-selectwe electrodes with such membranes dlsplayed a Nernstlan electrode function for chloride m the concentration range 10-'-O 1 M For the more concentrated NaCI soiutlons, the potential drift of the cell assembly was < 15 mV h-' and the response time (t wB) was < 10 s In 0 01 M NaCl, e m f repeatablhtles were found to be &O 16 and +O 29 mV for ISEs based on ETH 9009 and ETH 9011, respectively "C NMR studies showed ETH 9011 to interact with chloride and thmcyanate, formmg 4 1 complexes, but not with perchlorate and nitrate
