Β±)-Azemacrolides were synthesized via lipase-catslyzed intmmolccular cyclization of (~-)-hydroxy-azaesters. Further, the size of the macrocyclic lactones formed could be altered by the substituent on the nitrogen atom. This allows one to prepare a combinatorial library of azamacrolides from a small number of hydroxy-azaesters using this biocatalytic approach.
