-Stereoselective oxidation of sulfides such as (III), (VIII), or (X) gives the oxathiin-S-oxides (IV), (V), (IX), (XI), and (XII). Retro Diels-Alder reactions of these S-oxides lead to the reactive title intermediates of type (XIII), which can be trapped as electron poor dienes or dienophiles to give fused oxathiines such as (IX) or spirocyclic thiines such as (XV). -(CAPOZZI,
