Wittig Reactions in Water. Synthesis of New Water-Soluble Phosphonium Salts and Their Reactions with Substituted Benzaldehydes.

-Phosphonium salts such as (I) and (V) substituted with carboxylic or hydroxy groups are soluble in aqueous NaOH. These solutions react with benzaldehydes to give the expected stilbenes, which can be isolated by a simple filtration. -(RUSSELL, M. G.;
