Total Synthesis of the Serine/Threonine-Specific Protein Phosphatase Inhibitor. -A convergent, asymmetric synthesis of the title compound (I) with an overall yield of 1.5% and a longest sequence of 19 steps is described by use of the readily available terpenes citronellene and geraniol epoxide for the concise assembly of both halves of the spiroketal. Use of Duthaler's and Evan's chiral auxiliaries made it possible to install the remaining stereochemistry in late synthetic intermediates. -(SHEPPECK,
