Thieno[3.3]

orthocyclophanes: Preparations and Structures.

-Rigid orthocyclophanes (I)-(IV) with closely held, non-distorted, interacting Ο€-systems can be easily synthesized by coupling of the appropriate bis(chloromethyl)-substituted thiophene and benzene derivatives to dimethyl acetone-1,3-dicarboxylate, followed by decarboxylation and transformation into the cyclic acetals. The structures are assigned based on UV spectroscopy. -

An Unusual and Highly Efficient Access to Thieno[2,3-b]benzothiopyran Structures. -A direct method was studied to transform the xanthates (III) to the benzothiepine system (V). However a novel base-induced domino cyclization gives dihydrothieno[2,3-b]benzothiopyran-4ones (IV) instead.
