An Unusual and Highly Efficient Access to Thieno[2,3-b]benzothiopyran Structures.

-A direct method was studied to transform the xanthates (III) to the benzothiepine system (V). However a novel base-induced domino cyclization gives dihydrothieno[2,3-b]benzothiopyran-4ones (IV) instead.
