The Synthesis of Quaternary Carbon Centers Through Cyclialkylations.

-Treatment of the conjugated dienone (I) with Lewis acid at low temperature results in Diels-Alder reaction including the arene moiety to yield a hydrophenanthrene (II) with a newly created quaternary carbon. At higher temperature a following dienone-phenol rearrangement gives the tricycle (III).
