Synthesis of Asymmetrical Diindolylalkanes. -Indole reacts with nitrones (II) derived from aliphatic aldehydes in the presence of HCl (generated in situ from AcCl and MeOH), to give indolyl N-hydoxylamines (III). In the presence of Tms-Cl symmetrical diindolylalkanes (IV) are obtained. The latter conditions also allow the synthesis of unsymmetrical diindolylalkanes [cf. (VI)]. -(DENIS,

Reaction of Nitrones with Trimethylsilylketene. -Trimethylsilylketene reacts smoothly with diarylnitrones (I) to give oxindoles. Mixtures of N,N-diacylamines (V) and N-acylamines (VI) are formed with N-arylmethylnitrones (IV). The mechanism is discussed. -(TAKAOKA,
