β¦ Synopsis
The Electrochemical Corrosion of Pure Magnesium in 1 N NaCl. -The title process is studied at different pH values at 30 β’ C by potentiodynamic polarization measurements, STM imaging, and galvanostatic experiments to measure the amount of evolved H2 and dissolved metal. The electrochemical corrosion is controlled by a partially protective film on the Mg surface. With increasing applied potential the film coverage decreases. Upon application of an external current not higher than -0.5 mA/cm2 both the rates of Mg dissolution in NaCl and of H2 evolution are very low. Hence, cathodic protection may be promising for Mg corrosion protection. A new definition of the " negative difference effect" (NDE) is proposed. -(SONG, G.
