Synthetic Studies Toward the Kempane Diterpenes: Preparation of the Ring System.

-Starting with the Diels-Alder reaction of the diene(I) with (II) the adduct (III) is obtained, in which three of the four rings of kempanes are already in place. Transformations via the enone (VII) and stereoselective reductions provide (VIII), which in a Dieckmann cyclization of the final seven-membered ring affords the pentacyclic target (IX), which has all of the stereogenic centers of the kempane diterpenes in their correct configurations and oxygen functionality on every ring.
