Synthesis of the Monomeric Unit of γ-Actinorhodin.

-The title unit (XII) is synthesized for the first time via the addition of (VII) to (VI) followed by oxidative rearrangement of the obtained (VIII) to (IX) as the two key steps. Deprotection of dimethyl ether (XI) proceeds with epimerization at C-1. Attempts to form a dimer of (XII) fail.
