The title reagent (I) methylates a variety of mono-and diketones such as (II), (IV), (VII), or (IX). Aromatic aldehydes (XI) and (XIII) undergo simple methylation only after activation with AlCl3. Reaction of (I) with terminal acetylenes (XVI) allows the carbonyl-alkynylation of diphenyl ketone (IIa
