Ring Closure of 4-Substituted 1-Amino-1-(2-aminoanilino)-2,4dicyanobuta-1,3-diene via 5-exo-trig and 6-exo-dig Process.
-The formation of benzimidazoles (II) by heating of butadienes (I) in AcOH or aq. HCl is the result of a 5-exo-trig process. The cyclization of trinitrile (Ia) in a variety of alcohols in the presence of AcOH providing cyclic imidates (IV) represents a new route to these compounds. It is postulated that the formation of heterocycles (IV) is due to the reaction between two cyano groups (6-exo-dig process).
