Treatment of diaryl diselenides and dialkyl diselenides with metallic samarium and mercury (II) chloride in tetrahydrofuran conveniently gave samarium arylselenolates and alkylselenolates. These "living" species reacted with acyl chlorides, acid anhydrides, methyl chloroformate, organic halides, epo
