2-Phenylethyl Side Chains and Hetero Analogues.

-From the diazo precursors (I)-(III) the corresponding phenylcarbenes are generated thermally and photolytically. Stereorandom insertion reactions and large kinetic deuterium isotope effects point to a triplet abstraction-recombination mechanism forming different products. The product distributions reveal that the intramolecular reactions of functionalized arylcarbenes proceed, at best, competitively with spin inversion.
