Oxidative Reactions of Azines. Part 5. Ketodihydroxylation and Coupling of 4-(γ-Pyridyl)-1,2,5,6-tetrahydropyridines with Acetone. Molecular and Crystal Structure of 3,4-Dihydroxy-4-(γpyridyl)-1-ethylpiperidine-2-one. -The reaction of 4-(pyridyl-4)tetrahydropyridines (I) with acetone in the presence of permanganate affords the 2-acetylmethylenetetrahydropyridines (III) by C-C bond coupling and the 2-oxo-3,4-dihydroxypiperidines (IV) by ketodihydroxylation.
