Novel Synthesis of N-Methyl-1,2-benzosultams, an Unsuspected Demethylative Intramolecular Cyclization Reaction.

-Treatment of 2-(dimethylamino)-and 2-aminobenzenesulfonic acids with POCl 3 /PCl 5 does not yield expected benzenesulfonyl chlorides but 1,2-benzosultams like (II) and (VI). The sultam ring can be readily opened by coupling with an amine.
