โœฆ Synopsis

The new title compound is obtained in ยฟ 95% yield from a stoichiometric Na-Sn mixture upon heating at 800 โ€ข C and annealing of the quenched mixture for 10 weeks at 280 โ€ข C. As revealed from the single-crystal XRD data, the three-dimensional structure (orthorhombic, Cmcm, Z = 16) consists of infinite chains of interconnected clusters of tin pentagons stacked along the a axis. The pentagons contain four 4-coordinate Sn0 atoms and one 3-coordinate Sn-. The structure conforms well to the Zintl-Klemm electron-counting formalism. Na5Sn13 shows diamagnetic behavior. -(VAUGHEY,
