-All the internal, some of the external and some modes of eq-and ax-Mg 2 CoD 4 H are observed and assigned for the title compounds by combination of the three methods. An empirical forcefield is developed as an essential aid to the assignment.

## Preparation of the Hydrides Mg2FeH6 and Mg2CoH5 by Mechanical Alloying Followed by Sintering. -The production of Mg2FeH6 by the title process is significantly enhanced by milling of 2:1 Mg-Fe powder mixtures under H2 atmosphere followed by sintering at 623 K for 1 day under 50 bar H2 pressure.
