✦ Synopsis

The title compounds LnFeO3 (Ln: Er, Tm-Ln), crystallizing in the hexagonal space group P63cm of the YMnO3 structure type, are prepared by reaction of Ln(OAc)3 and Fe(acac)3 in 1,4-butanediol at 300 β€’ C. This phase, which forms together with small amounts of Fe3O4 and/or the garnet phase, irreversibly transforms into the perovskite phase upon calcination at β‰ˆ980 β€’ C. Replacement of 1,4-butanediol by ethylene glycol leads to formation of Fe3O4. Hydrothermal reaction of Fe(acac)3 with Ln(OAc)3 at 300 β€’ C, for comparison, yields a mixture of Fe2O3 and an amorphous rare earth phase.
