General and Efficient Approaches to Fused (1,2-a)Pyrroles and (1,2-a) Indoles.

-The title approach involves the synthesis of benzotriazolylattached fused pyrroles (VII) via intramolecular cyclization and fused indoles ( XIII) via (3 + 2) and (3 + 3) annulations. These intermediates are further transformed by alkylation and replacement of the benzotriazolyl group to provide a variety of functionalized fused pyrrole and indole derivatives, such as (X), (XV), and (XVII), by base-assisted eliminations to give derivatives (VIII), by Lewis acid promoted dimerization yielding carbazole (XVIII), and other reactions.
