β¦ Synopsis
Ge4-9: A Deltahedral Zintl Ion Now Made in the Solid State Reaction.
-Rubyred semitransparent single crystals of Cs4Ge9 and of the isostructural Rb4Ge9 are prepared at 800 β’ C from a nonstoichiometric mixture of the elements and characterized by single-crystal XRD and magnetic measurements. The pure solids (tetragonal, P41, Z = 16) contain the "naked" cluster Ge4-9. The structure consists of 4 crystallographically distinct Ge9 clusters exhibiting monocapped square antiprisms which due to the bond lengths are nido-polyhedra.
The compounds represent Zintl phases with fourfold negative charge of each cluster. Comparisons with the K-crypt-salts are discussed. Cs4Ge9 is a semiconductor.
