First Total Synthesis of Panaxytriol, a Potent Antitumor Agent Isolated from Panax ginseng. -The strategy for the first total synthesis of panaxytriol (VI) is based on the multistep preparation of the chiral fragments (II) and (IV) from D-xylose derivatives (I) and (III) and following coupling using the Cadiot-Chodkiewicz procedure. Deprotection of the resulting protected compound (V) confirms the stereostructure of the title compound to be (VI).
