Enantioselective Synthesis of Phenylpropanetriols. -The enantioselective synthesis of D-threo-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,2,3-propanetriol, an aquatic plant metabolite, and its three stereoisomers [cf. (VII), (XII)] from ferulic acid (I) involving a Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation key step is carried out in order to obtain data on stereostructure-bioactivity relationships.
