✦ Synopsis
Duplex α,β-Sialon Ceramics Stabilized by Dysprosium and Samarium.
-By addition of Dy or Sm as α-sialon stabilizing elements, dense . alpha.,β-sialon ceramics containing a minimum volume fraction of intergranular glass are prepared. Addition of Dy results in an α-sialon which is stable for longer periods of time in the temp. range 1350 to 1800 • C while Sm results in less stable α-sialon structures at 1450 • C and the formation of melilite, Sm2Si2AlO4N3, β-sialon, and the 21 R sialon polytype during prolonged heating. A sialon from 50:50 α/β-sialon powder mixtures consist of homogeneously distributed high aspect ratio β-sialon grains in an α-sialon matrix and exhibits high hardness (. apprxeq. 22 GPa) and increased toughness (≈ 5.
