Directed Methallylations as a Synthetic Route to 1,3-Polyols.

-Methallylboronic acid (II), applied as freshly prepared solution, reacts with Ξ²hydroxyketones (I) to produce the 1,3-diols (III) with good diastereoselectivity. Only the relatively small ethyl group gives poor selectivity. However, similar reaction with Ξ²-hydroxybenzaldehydes (IV) affords nearly a 1:1 mixture of syn and anti 1,3-diols (V). -(BRZEZINSKI, L.
