This article provides an overview on recent progress in the green synthesis of cyclic carbonates (CCs) from carbon dioxide (CO~2~) catalyzed by chlorine-free catalysts. Special emphasis is placed on the synthetic routes and catalyst structures that govern the reactivity and selectivity.

A series of betaine-based salts containing quaternary ammonium ion and carboxylic acid group were synthesized by direct protonation of anhydrous betaine using different BrΓΈnsted acids. The catalytic activity of these salts for the synthesis of cyclic carbonates via cycloaddition reaction of CO 2 wit
