Confirmation of Theoretical Predictions. -A systematic study of competitive reactions of the title compounds (I) and (II), generated by flash pyrolysis of (III) and (IX), with a variety of polar reagents is described. The reactivities towards (I) follows the general order amines ¿ alcohols ≥ aldehydes ≈ ketones. The ketene (II) shows similar selectivity toward alcohols. Both ketenes show significant steric discrimination toward alcohols. The results are in agreement with previous ab initio calculations. -(BIRNEY,
