✦ Synopsis

Characterization of TiO2-, ZrO2-and Al2O3-Supported Iron Catalysts as Used for CO2 Hydrogenation. -The catalytic performance in the synthesis of hydrocarbons others than methane from CO2 and H2 of the title catalysts, prepared by direct reduction in H2 atmosphere at 773 K of precursors obtained by incipient wetness impregnation, is studied. Catalysts with a 5% Fe loading on either TiO2 supports, prepared by hydrolysis of (iBuO)4Ti, or ZrO2 supports, obtained by decomposition of Zr(OH)4 at 873 K, exhibit the highest catalytic activity. As revealed from Moessbauer and EXAFS spectroscopies, the conversion of CO2 and H2 to hydrocarbons is favored in the presence of both zerovalent iron and coordinatively unsaturated cationic iron, i.e. Fe2+ for Fe/TiO2 and Fe3+ in the case of Fe/ZrO2.
