✦ Synopsis

Cation-Cation Interactions: Crystal Structures of Neptunyl(V) Selenate Hydrates, (NpO2)2(SeO4)(H2O)n (n = 1, 2, and 4). -Green crystals of (NpO2)2(SeO4)(H2O)4 (I), (NpO2)2(SeO4)(H2O)2 (II), and (NpO2)2(SeO4)(H2O) (III) are hydrothermally synthesized from mixtures of Na2SeO4 in 2 M aq. NaOH and in 0.86 M HCl (autoclave, 150 °C, 6 d, more than 99% yield of (I) and less than 1% yield for (II) and (III)). The structures of the compounds are determined by single crystal XRD. (I) crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1 with Z = 4. The compounds (II) and (III) crystallize in the monoclinic space group P21/c with Z = 4. The structure of (I) consists of layers of neptunyl pentagonal bipyramids and selenate tetrahedra. Compound (II) is built from puckered layers of neptunyl pentagonal bipyramids, which are connected by selenate tetrahedra to form a three-dimensional framework. The structure of (III) is a three-dimensional network of neptunyl pentagonal bipyramids decorated by selenate tetrahedra. -(JIN, G.
