β¦ Synopsis
Blue-Emitting Phosphor M 2 B 5 O 9 Cl: Eu 2+ (M: Sr, Ca) for White LEDs. -The title phosphors are prepared by solid state reaction of stoichiometric amounts of SrCO3 or CaCO3, SrCl2 or CaCl2 (5% excess), H3BO3 (10% excess), and Eu2O3 (corundum crucible, 900 Β°C, 4 h). The luminescence properties of the as-synthesized phosphors are studied under near-UV excitation. Photoluminescence (PL) spectra reveal a blue emission band, and the emission band shifts to a longer wavelength region as Ca 2+ substitutes Sr 2+ . The highest PL intensity occurs for a Eu 2+ concentration of 0.08, i.e. M1.92Eu0.08B5O9Cl (M: Sr, Ca). Compared to the commercial blue phosphor BaMgAl10O17:Eu 2+ , the title phosphors exhibit a narrower full width at half-maximum and higher PL intensity under near-UV light excitation. -(GUO*, C.;

## Abstract The title phosphor is synthesized by selfβsustaining combustion of SrX~2~ and EuX~3~ (X: F, Cl, I), micrometer sized Si powder, polytetrafluoroethylene, and urea under 2.0 MPa N~2~ pressure.
