## Abstract __N__‐Acyldehydroalanines 3 react with cysteine and penicillamine esters to give a single diastereomer of the thiazepines 6. By modifying this reaction, the requirements for steric control were elucidated and a series of penicillin analogs 6 and 12 prepared.
