A Streamlined Route to Highly Conjugated, all-(E) Polyenes Characteristic of Oxo Polyene Macrolide Antibiotics.

-Couplings at the vinyl stannane end in the readily available organometallic linchpin (I) can be carried out with vinyl halides following two basic methods. The terminal acetylene in these polyene products can be functionalized via zirconocene intermediates leading to products such as (X) and (XIII). With this new approach to all-(E) oxotetra-and oxopentaenes fragments of various natural products can be rapidly assembled.
