β¦ Synopsis
2 (I) and Na 8 [AlGeO 4 ] 6 X 2 (II) (X: Cl, Br, I) is achieved in a LiNO 3 melt at 240 β’ C. The neutron diffraction results show that the framework collapse associated with the Li exchange is accomodated by cooperative rotation about the 4 axis and a decrease in the framework Ga-O-Si (Al-O-Ge) bond angle. Complete replacement of Na by Li is possible for all sodalites (I) and for (II) with X: Br, I. In the case of Na 8 [AlGeO 4 ] 6 Cl 2 , the required level of structure collapse seems to preclude full replacement of sodium by lithium.
